20 May 2017, Pietermaritzburg: At approximately 07H50 on Saturday 20 May 2017, Netcare 911 paramedics responded to reports of a serious collision on the R56 in the Thornville area between Pietermaritzburg and Richmond.
Netcare 911 dispatched several vehicles and were first to arrive and secured the safety of the scene. Reports from the scene indicate that the SUV was on a school outing heading towards Pietermaritzburg for an inter-school event when it collided with the truck.
Paramedics assessed and attended to seven people at the scene, all from the SUV, including three teachers and four uniformed teenage learners, two boys and two girls.
Thankfully all of them were in a stable condition with injuries ranging from minor to moderate. Firefighters used the “Jaws of Life” to free one of the injured who was stuck in the wreck.
Netcare 911 ambulances transported four of the injured while the other three were transported by different ambulance services. The driver of the truck was not injured in the crash.
This incident was also attended to by the local traffic police authorities.
